“The limits of my language are the limits of my mind”
The first attempt at a uniform German language appears first in the north of Germany for the purposes of the Hanseatic League, but disappears with the decline of the latter in the fifteenth century. The roots of the standard German are found in the south of the country. At the end of the fourteenth century, to meet the needs of the chancelleries under the reign of Charles IV, a German language was born "above the dialects" of the High German. At the end of the 15th century, this common language of Middle Germany became necessary for trade and, favored by the advances of the printing press (Gutenberg in 1450), followed by the translation of Luther's Bible (1521), finally imposed in front of Latin. It will not be until the XIX century that the standardized German is regulated.
